Abolitionist Teaching

Back in May of 2019, We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom by Dr.  Bettina Love was given to me as a gift from a mentor. At first, I was not sure what to expect after looking at the title. I was not familiar with Dr. Bettina Love or her work. During my career as an educator, I often talk to students about the difference between surviving and thriving.  My goal for all my students is to provide them with an opportunity to succeed in their chosen field of human endeavor. As I started reading the book, it became clear why Dr. Browne gave me the book. During meetings with my teachers, I used lines and thought from the book to guided our work. If you are interested in know more about the Educational Survival Complex, Spirit Murdering, and Loving Blackness as an educator, this is the book for you.

The book takes a critical look at how black and brown children are treated in our K - 12 systems and provide solutions to help children thrive. For those not familiar with abolitionist teaching, this will spark your interest to know more.
